The Evolving Roles of Spas in the Medical, Wellness and Healing Arts Arenas

Jean-Guy de Gabriac

With an ever-increasing number of people racing against time and fighting stress, SPAs can no longer be a place to simply indulge. Guests want more than a “treatment”, they are looking for an “experience” with immediate, visible results on the body, a log-lasting imprint in their minds and a transformational impact on their psychological well-being and their health.

No matter how expensive your design, architecture and marketing campaigns are, it all boils down to what happens once the door of the treatment room is closed ! Is your team ready to deliver an outstanding client's experience ?

This day, with our outstanding speakers, is all about helping your team go from “good” to “great” and have your clients/guets return for more!

International Standards for Skin Care Products

by Joerg Demuth and Mark Wuttke

Over the past decade, the increased demand for natural and organic skin care products resulted in more green companies and more green products. The good news is that consumers have more choices than ever before. But while some of these companies and products are authentically green, others are merely semi-green, or just barely green.

Yet many of them claim the same benefits and quality. How can this be? The short answer is it can’t. So how do consumers make the right choices, and separate the authentically green companies and products from the mimicry and marketing spin that comes with expanding markets?

The presentation at the BISA Conference will demystify the language and put into plain and simple terms the steps one needs to evaluate the authenticity of a brand.

Adding water experiences into an existing spa or new spa projects with water systems that are unique, functional and minimize unnecessary waste are a challenge for spa designers and developers. This presentation will review different criteria required and technologies now available that contribute to the planning and decision making process for water based treatments and experiences, optimize equipment and products selection, reduce unnecessary expenses and minimize environmental impact.

Medical and Wellness Tourism

by Dr. László Puczkó

Health motivated travel has always been around. Many ancient Greeks, Romans or Chinese travelled seeking remedy, recuperation or even medication. Can we then say that we are doing nothing else but reinventing the wheel?

Yes, and no. Certain products, services, treatments or rituals became global and now are
available in almost any day, destination or hotel spa all around the world. Many tourism developers and managers think that providing the same old services would mean stable demand and financial success, too. Demand, however changes: travellers look more and more for local qualities and expect never-seen experiences.

In the last couple of years new concepts and definitions (e.g. selfness) emerged. These, considered by many, mainly add to the confusion of a prospective traveller. The spectrum of expressions and the translations of which to different languages do not help either the work of a marketer or the understanding of a visitor. Still, health motivated (and related) travel can be seen as something many destinations and services provides surely can build on.

The Truth Behind Salt Rooms – Differences and Commonalities

by Bart Zonnenberg

Over the last years, salt has become an indispensable item within professional spa environments. Given the variety of salt concepts available today, ranging from common salt caves and saline steam cabins to sophisticated dry salt aerosol microclimates, monitored by measurement devices, it is hard to understand the differences between them.

Which characteristics do they all have in common and what are the differences between salt caves, saline steam cabins and dry salt aerosol rooms from an implementation/building perspective and health perspective?

Microsalt distinguishes decoration from physical health effects and presents a clear overview of the three types of indoor salt concepts available today.
