Saline and Salt Extraction in Bad Sulza
Together, the various individual saline works in Bad Sulza make up the most extensive saline facilities in Germany. The development of Bad Sulza is inextricably linked with history of salt extraction from the saline aquifers beneath the town. The roots go back as far as the 15th and 16th Centuries but it was in the 18th Century that salt extraction first took place at a larger scale. New saline water aquifers were tapped, and a graduation-house and a two-storey reservoir building were erected. Salt extraction continued until as recently as 1967 when the salt works were closed and the graduation-house now serves as an inland inhalatorium. Further machinery throughout the town is still intact and bears testimony to a fascinating industrial heritage.
The morning features a tour of the historic saline and salt extraction machinery and facilities as well as a visit to the graduation house in the town of Bad Sulza. The tour will be lead by the Bad Sulza Spa Administration in both German and English. The tour starts at 9.00 a.m. at the entrance to the Toskana Therme.
